The Garden Classroom runs imaginative educational sessions and events, focusing on gardening, wildlife, science and the environment. Activities take place in gardens and green spaces around London, creating a link to the outdoors for those who live in the inner city.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families' Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto states:

'Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.'

This pioneering enterprise has been set up by Marnie Rose who is passionate about redressing the balance between urban life and our natural environment. The idea evolved out of the need identified by those involved in King Henry's Walk Garden - a community garden in Islington - for an organisation that can provide educational and recreational activities to engage inner city residents in their environment, give them a better understanding of the world around them, and improve their own health and wellbeing at the same time. Marnie has been a volunteer committee member for the garden since the project began in 2005.

'Wow! Little green corners and little green fingers come together in Islington’s Garden Classrooms. What a fantastic backdrop for active healthful living and learning in the leafy glades of London N1.'
Professor David Bellamy

The success of the programme embarked on between The Garden Classroom and King Henry's Walk Garden is evidenced by the judges' report on Islington's Silver Gilt Award in Britain in Bloom 2009, which described King Henry's Walk Garden as a 'centre of learning excellence'.
